ESoS Ph.D. Admissions Timeline

Thank you for your interest in applying to the Environmental Social Sciences PhD program.  Below you will find a timeline of our application process, as well as links to information to help you through the process:

  • Mid-September 2026: ESoS Ph.D. Application opens. Visit this page to apply to our graduate program.
  • week of Oct 5, 2026: ESoS Ph.D. Admissions Information Session.
  • November 3, 2026: Fee Waiver Application Deadline - certain applicants are eligible for application fee waivers. Please check the Application Fee Waiver for more details.
    • You are notified via email when your request is approved or denied. If your request is approved, the fee waiver is automatically applied to your account and you are not prompted to pay the application fee to submit your graduate application.
  • November 17, 2026: ESoS Ph.D. Application Deadline - all required materials must be submitted online to Stanford Graduate Admissions.
    • We recommend submitting your application a least a day before the deadline in case you have technical issues submitting your application or payment information. Submit a help ticket request to Graduate Admissions (select current applicant) if you have technical issues. Please note, Graduate Admissions monitors help tickets during regular business days and hours. You must successfully submit your application and pay the application fee by our deadline for your application to be considered. Late applications will not be accepted and the deadline cannot be extended.
  • January 2027: A short list of prospective students will be notified and interviewed for the program (virtual interviews).
  • February 2027: Final decisions will be communicated to all applicants and admitted students will be invited for a site visit.

  • April 15, 2027: Response deadline from admitted students.

Application Status Updates

Due to the high volume of applications, we cannot respond to individual inquiries about the status of an application or of documents submitted. Please refer to the timeline above for deadlines and updates on the admissions process. The timeline above refers to both subplans in the Environmental Social Sciences PhD program. Decisions will be made on all applications by the end of February.
