ESoS Graduate Program Required Materials

Materials must be submitted online to Stanford Graduate Admissions, and all applicants must submit the following materials:

  • A statement of purpose. This statement should describe succinctly your reasons for applying to the proposed program at Stanford, your preparation for this field of study, research interests, future career plans, and other aspects of your background and interests that may aid the admissions committee in evaluating your aptitude and motivation for graduate study. Highlight your motivation and preparation for graduate study in our program and describe at least one research question on which you could be interested in working were you a PhD student in our program. Please also describe how you might approach this problem. This statement should not exceed two single-spaced pages. For additional information about the statement of purpose, please click here.
  • Research experience (optional). Here you can describe any prior research experience in two pages or less. This should not be duplicative of information in the Statement of Purpose.
  • Three letters of recommendation. We highly recommend that at least one letter come from a university professor familiar with your academic work and performance. For additional information about recommendation letters, please click here.
    • Recommendation letters received after the application deadline will still be attached to your application and viewable to the admission committee. Late letters are not guaranteed to be reviewed.
  • Transcripts. Please upload scanned (unofficial) copies of transcripts from every college and university you attended for at least one full year as a full-time student by the application deadline as part of your online application.
    • If you are offered admission to Stanford and accept the offer, you will be required to submit official transcripts/degree conferral documents. For additional information about transcripts, please click here.
  • GRE. The general GRE test is optional for both subplans and there is no minimum GRE score. However, the GEP subplan STRONGLY encourages the GRE submission for full consideration*. EBS subplan applicants can submit their GRE scores if they wish and scores will be evaluated with your application in a holistic manner.     • Any scores you self-report on the application are considered unofficial and sufficient for the initial review process. You only need to verify your scores if offered admissions. Therefore, you need to have taken the test and received the scores before you submit your application but you only need to verify your scores if offered admissions.
  • English proficiency test. For applicants whose first language is not English, TOEFL or IELTS scores are required*. For additional information about the English proficiency test exceptions, required exams and how to submit your official scores, please click here.
    • The PhD program cannot verify if your experience in English is sufficient to not be required to submit TOEFL/IELTS scores. Use your best judgement to determine whether you meet the criteria. When in doubt, we advise you to select "No" to the experience question and submit TOEFL/IELTS scores with your application.
    • You will not be required to submit English proficiency test scores in the application if your responses on the Personal Background page reflect that you meet certain criteria (review the English Proficiency Requirements for the criteria); no additional documentation is required at the time of application. If you are offered admission and accept the offer, you may be required to submit supporting documentation as a condition of admission.
    • If you do not meet any of the criteria, then you are required to submit an official TOEFL or IELTS test score that meets the university’s minimum score for admission consideration during the application process.

* Students are strongly advised to take standardized tests no later than mid-October to ensure scores are transmitted to the department by the application deadline. Stanford’s ETS institutional code is 4704.
